Articles

Exploring the engineering behind a more sustainable future.

I’m developing a series of articles on water, energy and industrial decarbonisation. Each will bring together published research, engineering calculations and my own analysis.

These pieces are in development or planned. Links to the full articles will appear here as each is completed.

The Carbon Cost of AI

Exploring the electricity sources and emissions behind growing AI data centres, including natural gas. I’ll compare renewable energy and carbon capture options, their costs relative to company profits, and the potential for international standards on how AI is powered.

Nutrient Pollution in UK Waters

Examining the sources and impacts of nitrogen and phosphorus pollution in rivers and coastal waters, and the treatment technologies and wider measures that could reduce nutrient discharges.

Could Microalgae Contribute to Tertiary Wastewater Treatment?

Drawing on my MSc research with Northumbrian Water to explore immobilised microalgae for nutrient removal, with a focus on performance, operational challenges and the practical limits of scaling up.

Decarbonising Cement Production

Considering emissions from both fuel use and limestone calcination, and assessing options including alternative fuels, clinker substitution, biomass pyrolysis and carbon capture.

Carbon Capture: Where Does It Actually Make Sense?

Exploring where carbon capture could deliver useful emissions reductions, and where its energy demand, cost, transport and storage requirements make other approaches more suitable.

From study to independent research

Keeping the questions going.

While awaiting my dissertation result and applying for graduate roles, I’m continuing to research and write about the environmental challenges that interest me. I’m balancing this work with hospitality shifts and supervisory responsibilities, alongside plans to fundraise for Cancer Research UK.

As each article develops, I’ll add references, explain calculation assumptions and distinguish my analysis from the evidence it draws on.
